Since 2019, Japanzen has been selecting authentic Japanese products chosen for their quality, origin, purpose and the stories they tell.
Japanese knives, tableware, furoshiki and tenugui, traditional clothing, incense, decorative objects and tea accessories: our collections are intentionally diverse, yet they all reflect the same standards and philosophy.
We want to offer meaningful objects that provide a genuine way to discover Japan beyond the usual clichés.
Japanzen is an independent French company, but our selection is built first and foremost through the relationships we have developed with Japan.
Japanese products selected directly in Japan
For us, offering Japanese products means much more than simply browsing catalogues.
We regularly travel to Japan to meet our suppliers and manufacturers, discover new workshops and deepen our understanding of the craftsmanship and regions behind the products we select.
From Kyoto to Sakai, from Seki to Niigata, these encounters allow us to gradually build lasting relationships with Japanese companies and craftspeople.
Above all, they enable us to better understand what we sell: a material, a manufacturing technique, a regional tradition, a particular use, or sometimes simply the story behind an everyday object.
Selecting products in Japan rather than simply selling products from Japan: this distinction is at the heart of our approach.

Our aim is not to offer the largest catalogue possible.
We prefer to build a coherent selection and choose products whose origin, purpose or craftsmanship we can understand and explain.

Japanzen is more than an online shop.
Our physical store is located in Montélimar, in the Drôme region of southern France. Here, you can discover our collections, see and handle many of our products and, above all, speak with us directly.
This physical presence is an integral part of the way we work.
Choosing a Japanese knife, understanding the differences between various steels, discovering an incense, comparing pieces of tableware or learning how to use a furoshiki sometimes requires more than a photograph and a few lines on a product page.
We therefore want to preserve this human connection and share what we have learned through our research, encounters and travels throughout Japan.
The Japanzen spirit: authenticity, simplicity and wabi-sabi
The name Japanzen reflects a particular way of approaching Japan.
We are especially drawn to an aesthetic in which an object does not need to be spectacular to be beautiful.
A material that evolves over time, handcrafted production that may reveal subtle variations, a simple shape, or an object designed primarily to accompany everyday gestures can, in our eyes, hold greater value than purely industrial perfection.
This sensitivity echoes some of the principles of wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic that invites us to appreciate simplicity, the passage of time and the natural imperfection of things.
We try to preserve this spirit in our choices: favouring authenticity, simplicity and sincerity over an artificial representation of Japan.
